Viterbo and surroundings

The apartments are located in the medieval San Pellegrino quarter which, besides being one of the best preserved in Italy, is also the largest in Europe.

Being right on the edge of the restricted traffic zone is especially convenient: although in the historic centre, the apartments are easy to reach by motorbike and car, are 4 minutes' walk from the large free car park in Via delle Fortezze and 7 minutes' walk from Porta Romana railway station. Just outside the front door, turning right, you will find Via San Pellegrino, the main street of the quarter, where buildings and paving share the same look because they are built of peperino and basalt stone (both volcanic and dark grey). Walking around the quarter you can spot some typical local architectural features:

• — the so-called "Profferlo": an external staircase giving access to the upper floor of the house, while the workshop was often on the ground floor;
• — the "Case a Ponte" (bridge houses): homes joining two buildings separated by a street, creating charming covered passages;
• — the "Richiastro": a service courtyard onto which one or more homes faced;
• — the fountains: many are of historic and artistic importance, including the San Tommaso fountain in Piazza della Morte, the San Giovanni in Zoccoli fountain in Piazza Dante Alighieri, the San Faustino fountain in the square of the same name and many more;
• — the city walls and 13 gates: Porta Romana, Porta Fiorentina, Porta della Verità, Porta Faul, Porta San Pietro and others;
• — the Papal Palace (the symbol of the city), where the first conclave in history was held;
• — the Monastery of Santa Rosa, patron saint of the city, where you will find an urn with her intact body. In her honour, every year on 3 September, the "Macchina di Santa Rosa" is carried through the city, a tradition now part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage.
