San Pellegrino and the old town of Viterbo
The Bed & Box apartments are in the old town of Viterbo, a few minutes' walk from San Pellegrino, one of the best preserved medieval quarters in Italy.
The medieval quarter of San Pellegrino
San Pellegrino is a maze of alleys, arches, towers and houses built in peperino, the grey volcanic stone typical of Viterbo. Its most recognisable feature is the profferlo, the outdoor stone staircase leading to the first floor.
The heart of the quarter is Piazza San Pellegrino, with its church and the Palazzo degli Alessandri. It is free to explore on foot in any season and is the easiest way to picture medieval Viterbo.
The city of the Popes
Viterbo is known as the City of the Popes: in the 13th century it was a papal seat, and the Palazzo dei Papi with its famous Loggia hosted the conclave that shaped the rules still used to elect the pontiff.
Next to the palace stand the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and, a short distance away, Piazza del Plebiscito with the Palazzo dei Priori. The whole route is an easy walk from the apartments.
